Hickory Creek’s Veterans Memorial Park

The Town of Hickory Creek formally dedicated its Veterans Memorial Park, honoring all those who have served and are serving in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard, on Saturday July 9, 2011 at 9:00 am. The Memorial is located adjacent to the Hickory Creek Town Hall at 1075 Ronald Reagan Avenue.

The Veterans Memorial, featuring flags and bronze seals from all branches of the Armed Services and a plaza of pavestones honoring individuals who have served our country during war and times of peace, has long been a goal of the Hickory Creek Town Council. Architect Timothy May, a long time Hickory Creek resident, donated his time and expertise to design the Memorial and help make it a reality.

Representatives from each branch of the military were at the dedication ceremony to raise their flags over the Memorial. MIA and POW soldiers were honored by local branches Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Posts and Boy Scouts from the Lake Cities area assisted with the raising of the American Flag and leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Flight of the Phoenix Escadrille flew over the dedication in a salute to their fellow veterans. The Escadrille, a four man fight team of various T-6 “Texan” aircraft based in Gilmer Texas, honors the 47th Pursuit Squadron from WWII, which was deployed to Haleiwa Field, Hawaii on December 7, 1941.

Vocal Magic, a local a cappella chorus, performed patriotic songs. Don Shannon, pipe major for the North Texas Caledonian Pipes and Drums and a native of Ireland now living in Dallas, provided the haunting sounds of his bagpipes.

Special thanks also goes to the Patriot Guard Riders, Frenchy’s Lawn and Tree Service, the Denton County CERT Team, the Honorable Myra Crownover, and the Lake Cities Boy Scouts for their contibutions
